What is Walkenried?
The climatic spa Walkenried is located in the south of the Harz mountains with an altitude of 280 - 350 m, has 2600 inhabitants and became famous thanks to its former Zisterzienser cloister.
The Zisterzienser museum Kloster Walkenried was opened 2006 as one of the most modern and large cloister museums in Germany and provides fascinating insights into the Middle Age and let the cloister work become alive. Other highlights:
- The Kreuzgang concerts, performed for more than 20 years now with international successful artists.
- A guided tour at night with candles and torches
- The "Kniesteressen" (Harz speciality)
The interesting landscape around Walkenried with the many fish ponds, created by monks, walking paths and plaster karst areas welcomes walking activities and recreation. The modern camping ground and lots of comfortable pensions and holiday flats offer suitable accomodations.
